Tahr

Himalayan Tahr live in the Southern Alps of New Zealand and were first introduced to the South Island in 1904.

The Tahr can be hunted year round with the prime season being from late April until August. With the males dense wooly coat and thick shaggy mane, the Tahr is a beautiful trophy animal to be hunted. The spring coat is much shorter and lighter in color, and the winter coat is reddish brown to dark brown in color. The rut occurs from October to January.

Since hunting is done mainly on foot, a reasonable fitness level is required. Helicopter charters are also available for an additional fee to help aid in your hunt.

The horns are triangular in cross-section and are found in both sexes. They curve upward, backwards, and then inwards, to a maximum length of 45 cm / 18 inches, and are usually larger in males.
