We conduct our Rocky Mountain Elk Hunts in the Kootenay region of Southeastern British Columbia, 200 miles north of Kalispell, Montana. We offer a shuttle/hotel service from and back to Kalispell for our flying clients. We can arrange to pick you up or meet you (if driving) the day before your hunt starts and bring you to the main lodge. Once we check you into one of the cabins, quick tour of the camp and introduction of staff and guides we have dinner and prepare for the hunt. You and your guide will set out early morning the next day in pursuit of a big bull. This commences the 1st day of 6 day hunt. Bulls should be in full rut and can be anywhere from the river bottom to the rocks. Weather is always a factor and plays a key role in where the elk could be. Typically we set out on horseback or in pickup trucks to access prime hunting locations to glass and call. Once you and your guide locate a big bull you might stay in one of our spike camps or on the mountain in a tent. Our horses are always available and very important in this country to pack all the meat out if you shoot one in the backcountry.
The call of a challenging bull is one of the most exhilarating experiences a hunter can enjoy. Bulls will be bugling in search of cows in heat and to fend off other bulls. The Rocky Mountains are rugged as they are beautiful so be prepared to do some hiking. Ultimately we want to call in bulls to close distances for an easy shot and to feel that heart pumping excitement of a bugling bull elk coming into investigate. Expect to make shots up to 300 yards as this country is vast and bulls don't always come in. We suggest a 30 caliber or bigger rifle but as long as you have a good big game rifle and bullet that has been proven and you are comfortable with then that's the rifle to bring. Our hunters have experienced 60% kill success in last few years as bulls must have at least six points on one side to be legal which helps maintain a quality trophy population. Bull elk in our area can reach sizes up to 370 class but the average bull scores between 300 and 330 class. Mountain Goat, Shiras Moose, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Black Bear and Wolf tags can be added onto this hunt as well as additional days.
